DIA DE LA CANDELARIA

Mexico is a country full of traditions, one of them is celebrated on February 2nd, it is called “DIA DE LA CANDELARIA”. The name comes from “CANDELA”, which is a way to call candles in some places in Mexico . Therefore it is the day of the Candle, or light, and the purification of the Virgin Mary. February 2 nd happens exactly 40 days after Christmas and it is the day that baby Jesus was presented to the temple by his parents, according to Jewish tradition. It is also the day that the Virgin Mary was purified after the quarantine required in those historical times, after having a baby. In Mexico signals the end of the Christmas festivities. On this day baby Jesus is “lifted” from the nativity scene and taken to the church to be blessed. This is also the day all Christmas decorations are taken down, until next Christmas.

As with most traditions in Mexico , there are both European and Aztec roots to this celebration. The influence from Pre-Hispanic times come with the timing. For them this was the beginning of the year in which the corn, that was going to be used for seeding the next crops, was blessed to ensure a good harvest for the year.

Also the traditional food for the day: tamales, is a pre-colombian tradition, it is believed that tamales were taken to the Gods Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue, (Gods of the water) on insure abundant rain to produce good fruits from the earth. Now seeds and candles, which are considered good to keep away evil and sickness are blessed in this day. The baby Jesus that was used for the nativity scene, usually gets new clothes before going to the temple to be blessed. It is like a new christening gown, many people used their creativity and bring the baby dressed in different colors, sometimes as the king of heaven or a white dove symbolizing peace on earth, sometimes even like a soccer player.

Another part of this day starts starts back on January 6 th with the visit from the wise men to baby Jesus celebrated on this day. This is called DIA DE REYES (or kings day). It is traditionally the day that kids get presents in Mexico , as the wise men presented gifts to the baby. On January 6 th there is a traditional egg bread served that looks like an elongated wreath. It is decorated with dried fruits and sugar on top, with a baby Jesus baked inside it. This is called a ROSCA. There used to be a ceramic doll inside but nowadays inside is a small plastic baby doll (monito). Whoever gets the baby Jesus in their slide of this bread, becomes the godfather or godmother of the baby and is asked to invited friends and family to tamales on February 2 nd . They are also responsible for the new christening gown for the baby. This tradition has changed a little. Now the bread has more than one baby in it, so that more people can get together on DIA DE LA CANDELARIA.

One will bring tamales, another atole, and so they can help each other with the celebration, never leaving out the tamales that are the traditional food of this day. Some people called tamaliza.

This is all part of a long Christmas tradition that starts with the posada on December 16 th.
